Frequently asked questions

Does Setsumei require an account?

No. You can analyze sentences, build My Grammar, and use the sentence library without creating an account.

How does My Grammar work?

Save a grammar point from a sentence lesson to keep it with that sentence as context. In My Grammar, you can search saved points and personal notes, add or edit a note, reopen saved sentences, and mark grammar as mastered.

How do I analyze a sentence?

Type or paste Japanese into the editor, choose one of the included examples, or search the sentence library. Select Explain this sentence to create a lesson.

How can I send feedback about a grammar explanation?

Choose Report an Issue on the relevant grammar lesson. Setsumei prepares an email with the sentence and grammar point so the report has useful context. Nothing is sent until you review and send the email yourself.

Why is translation unavailable?

Make sure the Japanese and English language packs have been downloaded when iOS prompts you. Translation availability also depends on your iOS version and device support. Try the translation again after the downloads complete.

How do I delete saved data?

Open Settings and choose Clear sentence history to remove history and saved sentences. To remove a grammar point, its saved sentence contexts, and its personal note, open the point in My Grammar and choose Remove from My Grammar. Removing the app also removes its local data, subject to the behavior of device backups managed by Apple.

Which devices are supported?

Setsumei requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later and is designed for both iPhone and iPad.
